A Little Bit About Me

"My love of art was instilled in me by my grandmother. She taught me to experiment, to problem solve and eventually I was able to turn that knowledge into drawing. I won my first art scholarship in public school. Art has been the one constant in my life".

Cynthia Newans 2005

It wasn't till I was in my 40's (after raising a family) that I had the time and the opportunity to enroll in Art school and pursue a life long dream of developing my skills in that direction.

I enrolled in the three year Graphic Design and Visual Art program at Cambrian College in Ontario. I was on the Dean’s Honour List 6 times and graduated with highest honours. I was the class representative to the Advisory Committee during 1991-92-93 and represented the students of the Communication and Visual Arts Department at the meeting of the Board of Governors in 1992. I also worked on the Cambrian Shield newspaper, contributing many works for publication. I was awarded the first Bernard Poulin Art Scholarship in 1991 and the Northern Life Graphic Design Scholarship in 1993.

Five of my works were purchased as Honorariums for the Cambrians Permanent Art Collection, plus having work chosen to be in the Cambrian Art Exhibition at the Laurentian University Museum, in 1992 and the Cambrian College Student Art Exhibition in 1993 at La Gallerie Du Nouvel-Ontario.

I participated in the International Women Artists Exhibit in 1993-95, and also participated with other women artists in "ART in the Garden", in Sudbury, Ontario in 1995-99. My acrylic piece, “Season’s End”, was chosen in 1993 by the Northern Ontario Art Association to tour Ontario for 1 year and I also exhibited  at Cambrian College, Laurentian University Museum and at La Gallerie Du Novel-Ontario.

I was fortunate to be able to move to this beautiful  part of Canada, (Victoria, BC) in 1996 at which time I became an exhibiting member of an artist co-op “In The Arts,” from 1996-99. I am a past member of CACGV , Island Illustrators and Studio 30 and have exhibited work through them. I also had a solo exhibit at the Greater Victoria Library in August, 2005.

I began teaching Basic drawing, levels 1 & 2 in 2000, at ArtSpace in Victoria B.C. and  continue to enjoy this part of my career. Nothing thrills me more then helping to inspire the desire for drawing in a student. I continue to learn and grow and my journey is just beginning.......have a look in my gallery and see some of what I have done.
