The Big Red Hat

Written By Cynthia Newans

It was such a nice day. The sun was shining and there was only one fluffy white cloud in the sky. Little Lizzy’s grandma picked her up after school and they went for a ride to the mall. Grandma wanted to buy a birthday gift for her friend and she asked Little Lizzy to help her. After going to several different stores, grandma found a red hat that she thought her friend would like. She asked Little Lizzy to try it on so she could see what it looked like. The hat was very big and floppy with a lovely pink rose right on top. It looked very funny sitting on Little Lizzy’s head. It was so big that it covered Little Lizzy’s whole face. Grandma had to bend over and look under the wide brim to find Little Lizzy’s face as it had completely disappeared. She lifted the hat and said “Peek-a-Boo”! Little Lizzy and grandma laughed and laughed till tears came down their faces. They laughed so hard that the big rose fell off the top of that big red hat. Grandma took Little Lizzy to have an ice-cream and left the gift shopping for another day.

Little Furry Friend

Written By Cynthia Newans

Little Lizzy wanted to go over to her friend Sky’s house to play with him in his sand box. They liked to dig in the sand and build castles and roads for all the cars and trucks. Little Lizzy’s mom decided that she could walk over by herself. It wasn’t very far. Just across the road and down the lane. She stood by the driveway and watched Little Lizzy as she crossed the road by herself. Little Lizzy knew she had to be very careful. She stopped and looked both ways and listened for traffic. There were no cars coming. Carefully she walked across the road while her mom was still watching. On the other side she turned to wave to her mom. Then she started to skip down the lane stopping now and again to see something interesting. Suddenly she stopped! Right in her path was a big furry caterpillar. She knew that Sky would like to see it. Little Lizzy carefully picked it up and cupped it in her hands as she made her way to Sky’s house. When she got there they both found a nice patch of grass and put the colourful wiggly caterpillar on a pretty yellow flower. They watched it stretch and curl on a big leaf. Then giggling and holding hands, off they went to build a castle or two in the sandbox.

Surprise Cake

Written By Cynthia Newans

The rain was hitting the window and Little Lizzy decided that it would be a good day to stay indoors and help her mother with the baking. Little Lizzy loves to bake. She gets to wear her pretty apron with the orange and purple flowers on it that her aunt Carolyn gave her. She helped bring out the big blue mixing bowl. It was a very special bowl. Little Lizzy’s mom had if from the day she was married and it was loved very much. It was also special because of all the wonderful things that were created from it. Sometimes it would be chocolate chip cookies or Ginger cake and many other sweet delights. Little Lizzy was excited to see what special treat her mom would make today. She helped mix flour, sugar, eggs and spices. She used a big wooden spoon to stir everything. Pretty soon her mom helped her put the batter into a pan and then into the oven. While the cake was baking Little Lizzy and her mom sang silly songs as they cleaned up the kitchen.

Oh I’m going to the garden to eat worms!
Oh I’m going to the garden to eat worms.
Big fat juicy ones.
Long slim slimey ones.
Itsy-bitsy, teenie weenie worms.
Oh I’m going to the garden to eat worms!

Before too long it was time to take the cake out. They made a nice fluffy pink and yellow frosting for it and even put cherries on top. It was a surprise for her dad. He loves cherries.

Cozy Quilt

Written By Cynthia Newans

On Saturday morning it was hard to get Little Lizzy moving. She was all bundled up in a nice cozy bed covered with a colourful quit. It was such a warm cuddly quilt that her aunt Francie and aunt Margaret had made for her. Little Lizzy just wanted to stay there, where it was all warm and soft. She even had her cat Phoebe cuddled up with her. She was curled in a furry ball beside the pillow. But it was time to get up and get moving. Little Lizzy’s mom came into the room and said, “ Little Lizzy you lazy head, get up…get out of bed! I have your favourite breakfast ready for you”. Little Lizzy pretended she was still sleeping. But when she smelled the French Toast with the melting butter and smothered in syrup she just couldn’t keep her toes from sneaking out from under that lovely quilt. Little Lizzy heard her mom giggle and when she peeked out from under the quilt she could see the twinkle in her mom’s eye. In no time flat she hopped out of bed and raced into the kitchen with her cat close on her heels. Little Lizzy’s mom sure knew how to get her moving. She smiled a big smile to herself as she watched Little Lizzy enjoying her breakfast.

New Shoes

Written By Cynthia Newans

It was a long time since Little Lizzy saw her friends Alyssa, Christena and their big brother Anthony. She was looking forward to her road trip to visit them. She had lots of stories that she wanted to share and she knew that they would have loads of fun playing together. Her mom took her to the mall to buy a new pair of shoes for the trip. Little Lizzy found an especially lovely pair. They were a wonderful green colour with some blue stripes and a big pink flower on the toe. There was even a yellow ribbon that tied around her ankles. Oh what lovely shoes they were! She wore them in the car. She couldn’t keep her eyes off them. Her mom kept pointing interesting things to look at out the window as they passed. Little Lizzy had eyes only for her new shoes. She would twist them this way and that way. She would point them up and then point them down. She even tapped them on the floor. Oh yes, Little Lizzy loved her new shoes. When her mom stopped for lunch Little Lizzy jumped out of the car and pranced into the restaurant; proudly showing off her new shoes as she went. Everyone looked at her and smiled. One very nice lady whose name was Elaine, told her she wished that she had a pair of shoes just like them. Little Lizzy giggled. When they arrived at Alyssa’s house there was a big surprise. Alyssa had a pair of shoes just like Little Lizzy’s. Both girls laughed! They were so happy to see each other and so excited that they had the same shoes on. Off they went arm in arm to show Christena and Anthony. Now Christena wants a pair just like her sister and her friend Little Lizzy. Anthony was very polite and said “no thanks”, when asked if he wanted some too. Everyone really giggled then.

Picnic with Parker

Written By Cynthia Newans

Parker was coming to spend the day with Little Lizzy. Parker was a new friend and Little Lizzy was getting very excited. She even spent the morning cleaning up her room. She picked up all the clothes and put the books back on the book shelf. She put her shoes in the closet and the toys in the toy box.
Parker was running up the driveway when she looked out the window. Little Lizzy went out to meet him. They were very happy to see each other. Both of them started to talk at once. Little Lizzy wanted to show him her new playhouse and Parker wanted to tell her all about his trip. Together they went running around the yard laughing and giggling. Parker told Little Lizzy about the new puppy at his house and how much fun he had playing with it and how it loved to sleep with him. He said that his mom didn’t really want him up on the bed., but when she wasn’t looking he crept up on it and cuddled nice and close to Parker. Then they both went into the playhouse in the backyard that Little Lizzy’s dad had built just for her. It was such a cute house with a white door and flowers growing beside the step. Inside was a picnic table and Little Lizzy’s mom had made some finger sandwiches for them to sit out there and have their lunch. Little Lizzy and Parker had their very first picnic together. It was always such fun when Parker came over. Little Lizzy and Parker talked and played together all afternoon. Pretty soon it was time for Parker to go home, but he would come and visit her again. They gave each other a hug and Parker got in the van with his mom, buckled into his car seat and waved good-bye and they drove away. Little Lizzy stood at the end of the driveway waving her arms and yelling “bye Parker, see you soon”.

A Mouse in the House

Written By Cynthia Newans

Little Lizzy opened one eye and could see the moon and bright stars through her bedroom window. She wanted to stay cuddled up in her nice warm bed with the colourful quilt, but she had to go to the bathroom. She waited as long as she dared. Slowly she stuck one foot out and onto the floor. Her toe touched the ice cold wood. She quickly pulled it back under the quilt. She tried again only this time she just shivered as she slipped her feet into a pair of soft slippers, bundled the quilt around her shoulders and headed down the hall. She moved slowly and quietly not wanting to wake up anyone else in the house. As she came around the corner she heard a squeak, a tiny squeak. She rubbed her eyes. She rubbed them again. What did she see but a little furry mouse as cute as can be? It was just sitting there in the middle of the hall looking at her as she looked back at it. She blinked her eyes, it blinked too. That was a funny thing to do! Well now, should she call her mom? Her mom would send it outside, this she knew. Should she call her dad? Her dad would try to catch it or hit it with his shoe. Hmmmm, what oh what to do? As she stood there trying to decide, the mouse blinked twice and scurried away.
Little Lizzy made her way back to bed and she wondered if she had just dreamed the whole thing up. She was determined that she would look for the mouse in the morning.
The tiny mouse snuggled up under Little Lizzy’s bed in a pretty blue shoe. Soon both of them were dreaming.

Did Little Lizzy dream about the mouse or did the mouse dream about Little Lizzy? That is a very good question .

Phoebe the Heirloom Cat

Written By Cynthia Newans

Phoebe is a very old cat indeed. But she is a very pretty cat! She has big green eyes and the most wonderful coat of many colours with a pure white bib under her chin and down her chest. Phoebe is a calico cat. She doesn't do very much, not really. I mean she eats and sleeps and even sits up tall on the window sill to check for birds in the yard. When she isn’t sleeping she is washing herself, but that is about all. Once in awhile she will briefly chase a ball and for a few moments is a younger version of herself. Most of the time she likes to curl up on grandma’s green and gold afghan in the sun as it streams in the window. On dull and rainy days she prefers the big bed with all the pillows, to cuddle into. If you are gentle she will let you snuggle beside her and she will stretch out very long and purr when you rub her tummy.
She belongs to Little Lizzy. She came to live with her when Little Lizzy’s grandma was sick and she just stayed. Little Lizzy’s dad calls her the Heirloom Cat.

Play Time at Pepperland

Written By Cynthia Newans

It was a hot sunny kind of day. A perfect day to go to the beach. Little Lizzy packed her swim suit and flip-flops. She put them into a big colourful bag along with a beach towel and huge orange umbrella. Her mom packed her a lunch.
She was going to the beach with her friends Sky, Naomi, Sam and Joseph. They decided they would go to Pepperland where there was a nice little pool to play in. They had fun catching tiny crabs and they letting them go. They found seashells that they put in a pail. They played catch with a Spiderman beach ball that Sky brought and they chased each other in the warm water.
Little Lizzy unpacked the nice lunch her mom had made and placed it on a log that she used for a table. Sky, Sam and Joseph were trying to catch a friendly sea gull in the water. Naomi and Little Lizzy found some nice big rocks to sit on and giggled as they watched the boys get all wet. After their lunch they all played catch and then sat under the umbrella for a rest. Little Lizzy lost one of her flip-flops and everyone ran around trying to find it. Naomi spotted it under the beach towel. But before she could get it the silly sea gull tried to eat it. Little Lizzy gave it some left over’s from their lunch. Then Joseph scared it off while Sky and Sam packed up the beach bags and Little Lizzy put her flip-flop back on. They all laughed when the sea gull came back looking for something else to eat.

The School Bus and Mrs. “D”

Written By Cynthia Newans

Monday morning shone bright and beautiful. It was time for Little Lizzy to get ready for school. Her bus would pick her up at the corner of the road.
Little Lizzy had her lunch and snack packed in her very favourite school bag. It was green and pink and had pretty blue flowers on it. She loved her bag because her aunt Shellie had given it to her and it matched her new school shoes.
She looked out the window and could see the bus coming. She grabbed her bag as she ran from the house shouting good-bye to her mom and her cat Phoebe. She didn’t want to miss the bus. When she got on the bus she met many of her friends. The bus driver’s name is Mrs. “D”, and she likes to sing songs as she drives the children to school. She sings silly songs that she makes up as she goes along.

Oh I wish I was a giant Jelly Fish…
Oh I wish I was a giant Jelly Fish!
I’d float around all day …..
I’d eat ice-cream from a dish!
Oh I wish I was a giant Jelly Fish.

Oh I wish I was a furry Teddy Bear…
Oh I wish I was a furry Teddy Bear!
I’d grow purple wings…
I’d go flying through the air!
Oh I wish I was a furry Teddy Bear.

Oh I wish I was a cuddly little cat…
Oh I wish I was a cuddly little cat!
I’d paint myself green…
I’d hide in daddy’s hat!
Oh I wish I was a cuddly little cat.

All the kids would laugh and giggle. By the time they got to school they were full of fun and they knew it was going to be another great day.

Little Timmy 2 Shoes

Written By Cynthia Newans

Little Timmy was Little Lizzy’s newest friend. They liked each other right off the bat. They knew that they would be great friends because they both loved shoes and because they were cousins.
Little Timmy 2 Shoes just moved here from Ontario and this was the very first time that he and Little Lizzy got to play with each other. Little Lizzy showed him her colourful room with all the toys and all the shoes. There where shoes on the floor, shoes on the table, shoes under the bed and under the chair. Yes, there where shoes everywhere. They had fun finding all the shoes and putting them away. Then they went outside to play.
They chased butterflies around the yard and climbed the apple tree looking for the biggest and sweetest ones. They sat under the rose bush and told each other a story. They even raided the Strawberry patch and had red berry juice all over their cute little faces. They lay in the long grass and watched the fluffy clouds fly by, trying to recognize funny animals. They laughed and giggled when they found a cloud that looked like an elephant with a mouse body and had a horse’s tail. Many more strange and wonderful creatures appeared and dissolved before their eyes. Was that a cow’s head on a chicken?

A Surprise Encounter

Written By Cynthia Newans

Running through the grass, Little Lizzy and Sky came to a complete stop. They saw the grass move. They were not sure what was there. At first they thought it may be a dragon but it couldn’t be a dragon because dragons were way too big. Then they thought it may be a giraffe but it couldn’t be a giraffe as giraffes where way too tall. Maybe it was an elephant? No, elephants were way too fat. Hmmmm what could it be?

Sky was the bravest kid on the whole Lane, so he got down on his hands and knees and parted the long grass to see what he could see. And guess what he saw. It was the cutest, smallest, greenest baby snake in the whole wide world. Its tiny face with big yellow eyes was staring right back at Sky. Sky whispered to Little Lizzy to get down and look at the baby snake. Both of them where down on their hands and knees staring at the itsy-bitsy snake. They tried to be very quiet so that they wouldn’t scare it. The teenie snake blinked its eyes and stuck out its tongue. Little Lizzy and Sky giggled. Sky gently picked it up and let it curl around his finger as Little Lizzy watched in amazement. Pretty soon she was brave enough to slowly pet its head. The baby snake just blinked its eyes and stuck out its tongue again. This time Little Lizzy and Sky laughed. Sky decided that they should let the baby snake go back in the grass to find its mother. He carefully parted the grass and put the tiny snake right back where he had found it. Then he and Little Lizzy went on their way.
